Student Lesson: Lindsay Ianello
Lindsay is a 16 handicap who has only been playing for 4 years, and as soon as I saw her swing I thought to myself that she would see significant progress right away. Continue reading
Student Lesson: Mike Sanders
Mike is a high school student who came to me last year after having struggled to make the playing squad for his team. Continue reading
Student Lesson: John Shmerler
John is an excellent player, but due to lack of time (he is a successful businessman) and a driver that doesn’t cooperate much of the time he has not been able to play up to his potential. Continue reading
Student Lesson: Justin Duffie
What you see here is a complete re-tooling of his swing that came about from hours of lessons and hundreds of hours of practice. Continue reading
Student Lesson: Sean Heintzleman
In this lesson you (and Sean) can clearly see that he has already begun to accomplish the changes we set out to make at the beginning of the lesson. Continue reading
Student Lesson: Using Swing Gizmos Effectively
This was an interesting lesson because I used two different swing aids to help a struggling student. Continue reading
Student Lesson: Dylan Murray
Dylan is an extremely talented player who had simply been suffering from bad information. Continue reading
Student Lesson: David Cohn
David and I have known each other for some 25 years, and I have worked with David a number of times during that span. He is 65 years old but works at his game and to improve his physical capabilities like someone 30 years younger (actually more so since most people of any age don’t do nearly as much work as David does). Continue reading
Student Lesson: Rick Wagener
This week’s lesson is a long time student, former major league pitcher Rick Wagener. Rick only plays a few times a month, but as an accomplished athlete he still expects to perform decently and hates hitting the ball with the glancing, cut-across action that his swing tends to produce. Continue reading
Student Lesson: Rick B
Rick is a long-time friend and my business partner at waynedefrancesco.com and wdglc.com. He runs a software company that produces ease of access programs for major online gaming companies. He is also an avid golfer, and I have been helping him with his swing off and on since we met, although never for any extended period of time. Continue reading
Student Lesson: David Brown
If you play the first part of this video and try to do your own analysis before you get to my own comments, you should stop reading this copy now and come back to it later, as the idea is for me to summarize what you are about to see. Continue reading
Student Lesson: Zach Verses
Zach has been a student of mine off and on for 5 years, although it has been quite intermittent and “off” more than on. In the video you can see that Zach has the ability to change and improve his mechanics, and has always been blessed with the knack for achieving a stellar line of compression through impact. However, he is also prone to reverting back to his old habits when he gets away from consistent lessons and plays more than practicing. Continue reading
Student Lesson: Jonathan Vassil
What we see here is a classic case of a good athlete with excellent motion and power but trouble controlling the ball as far as direction and trajectory. What jumped out at me right away was the dropping hands and steepening shaft in transition, and this was our major focus after doing some grip and setup work. Continue reading
Student Lesson: Chris Wagner
Chris is a first time lesson who has been a consistent lesson taker in the past, but has come off of a back injury that has kept him from playing for almost 9 months. Now that he feels better he wants to start off with a new opinion about what should be trying to do with his swing, and certainly after watching him hit a few shots then analyzing the video I have come up with at least 3 major items for him to work on. What is rare about this particular lesson is Chris’ ability to incorporate the suggested changes almost immediately, certainly something I rarely see but welcome wholeheartedly. Continue reading
Student Lesson: Bill Long
Bill is a website aficionado who decided to drive up to Maryland from North Carolina after enjoying the website and improving his game with information provided by the site. When he arrived he stated his one great desire, “a good takeaway”. He had taken numerous lessons from pros around a wide region, and had never come away with anything he could apply to his swing and use on the golf course. Continue reading
Student Lesson: Steve Strobeck
Steve is a long time student and an avid student of the game who is keenly interested in applying a more solid strike to his iron shots. His tendency is to “pick” the ball off the ground without taking a divot, a result of a lack of pivot rotation which keeps his right side from moving forward into the impact area and beyond. His difficulty stems in large part from a fairly unique (I have never seen anyone else with this particular malady) physical limitation, that of a fused right ankle. Continue reading
Student Lesson: Brian McCullough Part 2
After you watch this video, be sure to go back and watch the first “Student Lesson” with Brian that we did in early June. I have seen Brian once in between these two pieces, and what is apparent is something that holds true in general when teaching decent players who want to get to the next level. Depending on how long they have been playing (and fighting the limitations of their technique) we usually end up working on the same things for at least a few lessons. Continue reading
Student Lesson: John Alper
Here we have a perfect example of the need for technique to go along with athletic ability when it comes to hitting a golf ball. John excelled at many sports as a kid and still remains in top condition while working as a television producer. He has come to golf late and has played some but has found it to be more difficult than he ever imagined, so much so that he has not been able to enjoy playing due to extremely inconsistent and generally poor ball striking. Continue reading
Student Lesson: Jack Brinkman
Jack is a young junior who has been coming about once a week for about 2 months. He is a great example of how complicated swing issues can infect even talented young players, and our quest to clean up his swing and make it more functional and easier to manage is a lesson for all players who wish to change an odd pattern. You will see right away how Jack’s swing pulls behind him, then lifts abruptly and wheels out over the top. Continue reading
Student Lesson: Samyra Lewis
With Samyra the battle has been to get her to lean the shaft forward at impact with her irons, and here you can see the problem that exists in her first couple swings. We have focused on this in the past, but I always say that the lesson (any lesson) starts with the swing the student brings, and in this case it was obvious what we had to work on. Continue reading
Student Lesson: Bev Lane
Once again, the lesson of the week showcases an ongoing, chronic, troublesome, annoying problem that is keeping the student from bumping up her ball striking a level or two. In this case it is the early release, which is the number on reason people do not strike the ball solidly and take a divot after impact. Continue reading
Student Lesson: Derrick Montford
This video, which actually comprises two lessons given three weeks apart, is a perfect example of the need for video analysis and the difficulty that even the most diligent students have in incorporating changes into their swings. Derrick is a smart, capable player who understands what he is trying to do and practices to that end. Alas, as is often the case, the player’s feel does not equal what is actually happening. Continue reading
Student Lesson: Richard Kress
In this video you will not only see how Richard’s swing is progressing, but you will also see a detailed look at how I view Hogan’s swing and use the knowledge of what he is actually doing to try to help my students. Continue reading
Student Lesson: Brian McCullough
In this 10 minute video you will see something that always gives me a thrill, and that is a student making a substantially different and better swing at the ball, and producing a hugely improved impact, all in an hour lesson. Continue reading
Student Lesson: Everett
This video consists of two lessons I gave my student, Everett, who drove down from Pennsylvania after watching a number of my swing analysis videos on Waynedefrancesco.com. Everett is an avid, almost obsessive golfer who has had huge struggles with his ball striking over the years in spite of seemingly doing all the right things, that is practice and take lessons. Continue reading
Student Lesson: Jim Smith
Jim has been coming to see me for quite a few years, and has experienced a nice progressive improvement. As is usually the case, there was a combination of problems both conceptual and physical. Continue reading
