Kratzert and Foltz Showcase the Deficiencies of Empirical Analysis
When I use the words “empirical analysis” here it is not to make me look smart: rather, it is a jab at Brandel Chamblee (imagine that), who, in our Facebook debate, rambled on about the beauty of “observational” teaching as opposed to anything having to do with science or using technology such as video cameras and line and angle drawing software. Continue reading
Peter Kostis Outdoes Himself Analyzing Rory McIlroy’s Swing
Who in their right mind would ever claim that McIlroy’s arms drive his pivot, and that the evidence is a video of Rory when he was 3 years old? Continue reading
Swing Analysis: Ken Duke and Jason Dufner
Here we see two clear examples of excellent swings that produce great ball control and plenty of distance without utilizing huge amounts of upper trunk movement. Continue reading
Swing Analysis: European Tour Stars Nicolas Colsaerts and Brendan Grace
It is constantly amazing to me how many variations are allowable when it comes to hitting a golf ball, and that includes all aspects of the game, as every “stroke” is a hit of some sort. Continue reading
RBC Heritage 3rd round Leader: Swing Analysis: Carl Pettersson
It might be surprising to some to see me compare the seemingly ungainly swing of 4 time PGA Tour winner Carl Pettersson with Ben Hogan’s. Continue reading
Swing Analysis: The Masters Final Round: It’s Bubba!

Tiger’s “Over the Top” Rehearsal: Is it a Cut Swing?
Of course, the swing that most people are interested in is that of Tiger Woods, and here we discuss Tiger’s relatively new “over the top” rehearsal swing. Continue reading

Legends of Golf: Gary Player
He is the most underrated player of the 20th Century. A winner of over 120 tournaments worldwide and 9 major championships Player is not often mentioned in the same breath as Hogan, Snead, Jones, Nicklaus, Nelson and Palmer, although he certainly should be. Continue reading

Swing Analysis: Tiger, Ernie, Yani in the Bunker
I was scrolling through my model videos and I came across some bunker shots that I had saved under the heading “bunker”, and when I played each one I found I had some very cool shots of a few great bunker players. Continue reading
Swing Analysis: Rory and Tiger at the Honda
And speaking of Tiger, here we see that his swing is really coming around as his hands finally begin to track outward toward the ball starting the downswing instead of moving straight down. Continue reading

Swing Analysis: Brandt Snedeker

Tiger at Abu Dhabi
I think this week is mostly positive, and once Tiger and Foley have a chance to look at and work on a couple things he will only improve. One thing is for sure, if he starts pitching and putting like Tiger of old he will be a threat in every tournament he plays. Continue reading

Swing Analysis: Alvaro Quiros
Man, wouldn’t it be nice to be Alvaro Quiros for a week or two? What would it be like to be able to hit the ball well over 300 yards with a quick, compact swing that appears to involve little or no attempt to stretch or resist, although both of those characteristics are certainly in play in his motion. Quiros has the quintessential prototype “new tour body”, tall, lean and immensely strong, and he looks like an NFL safety rather than a golfer. Continue reading
Progress Report: Wayne D’s Swing December 2011

Swing Analysis: Mickey Wright
Arguably the greatest woman golfer of all time, Ben Hogan stated that he thought Mickey Wright had the best swing of anyone, male or female, that he had ever seen. As you watch this video you will see why Hogan was so enamored of her action, as it was smooth and powerful, athletic and aggressive, with clean, conventional plane lines reminiscent of Steve Elkington or Nick Faldo. Swing Analysis: Tiger at the 2011 Chevron: Finally, a Victory!

Johnny Miller Offers More Brilliant Swing Analysis
Yes, Johnny Miller was a great player, a major champion. Yes, he hit the ball (for a time) as well as anyone in his era. Yes, you would think he would know a ton about the golf swing and about the players who have been great in the past, and thus it would be educational to listen to what he had to say on the subject. Swing Analysis: Gary Woodland
I heard a story from a reliable source that in one of Gary Woodland’s first PGA Tour events he was to tee off on the 10th hole, a 385 yard par 4. He was 3rd to hit and the hole was playing a bit downwind, and when it came to be his turn to hit he just stood there and waited… Continue reading

Swing Analysis: Brandel Chamblee Keeps Hammering on Tiger
This little clip should come as no surprise to anyone who watches The Golf Channel with any regularity. Brandel Chamblee has a major problem with “modern instruction”, meaning any type of instruction that involves video analysis and technique work, and his feelings come out loud and clear (and obnoxiously) in his criticism of Tiger Woods and his coach, Sean Foley. Continue reading
Swing Analysis: Patrick Cantlay
You probably know Patrick Cantlay is an amateur, and is only a sophomore at Stanford. That he has accomplished so much is such a short period, mostly with an incredible 2011 in which he compiled a long list of highly impressive performances, including runner-up in the US Amateur, a 21st place finish in the US Open and a course record 60 in a Tour event, places him in rarefied air Continue reading
Swing Analysis: 7-Year Old Sofie Louis – Talent Personified
People ask me all the time why they have to work so hard on their games just to be decent, while others seem to be good in spite of their seemingly poor technique and lack of good practice habits and work ethic. The fact is that some people just have a “knack” for the game, and it is more apparent how things ultimately work without having any sort of deep understanding of exactly what they are doing. Continue reading
Swing Analysis: Tiger at the Australian Open
The video starts with a side by side view of Tiger at last year’s Chevron and just last week at the Australian Open in Sydney. What is quite amazing is the difference in the rehearsal swings he takes before each shot, one practicing dropping the hands straight down and almost behind him from the top, and the more recent ones having the hands move well out toward the ball, almost the complete opposite pattern. Continue reading
Swing Analysis: Jason Day
At first glance it might seem that Jason Day creates tremendous speed by just using his arms, as his body seems to move far less than most Tour pros, at least in the backswing. That, however, is only partially true. What is true is that unlike most of his counterparts Day does not lower at all in the backswing or in transition. Continue reading
Most Great Players Lower During Their Swings: So Wouldn’t You Figure It To Be a Good Thing?
The only way anyone can deny that lowering exists is to do what Michael Breed does in this snippet from the Golf Fix, ignore it even when staring straight at it. Listening to Mike talk about Scott’s head staying up while it is going down right on the screen would be funny if it weren’t for the fact that a lot of people watch this show to get information about the golf swing. Continue reading

Why was Tiger Struggling (And it’s Not Because He Dips His Head) ?
All right, so everyone is talking (still) about Tiger and his swing. Here I have taken Tiger’s most recent competition (the Frys.com Open) and compiled swings to compare with his swings of years past, especially those of the Harmon era. Continue reading
Hand Movement From the Top of the Swing: A Look at the Top 20 Players in the World Rankings
The entire purpose of this video is to record observations of a particular part of the swing as practiced by the top 20 players (according to the “World Rankings”). Too many acceptable variations are castigated by TV announcers who have not done their homework when it comes to knowing what the best players do. Video swing analysis is a powerful tool when it comes to teaching a player how to improve his or her swing. Continue reading
Swing Analysis: Justin Rose
In this case, we see the results of Justin Rose working with a teacher (Sean Foley) who works constantly with video, and that is a measurably different swing. Whether it is better is a matter of preference and opinion, and as you will see in the video there are things I think are improved and others that I would say aren’t. One thing is for sure, Rose is playing at a higher level the last two years. Continue reading
Swing Analysis: Webb Simpson
Watching Webb Simpson win two events in 3 weeks brings to mind the old adage that you “putt for dough”. Now, I don’t believe that you “drive for show”, as any player wishing to win big tournaments simply has to hit the ball reasonably well, but certainly the winning part of it has a ton to do with making tons of putts, which Webb does consistently with one of the fastest strokes on tour. Continue reading
Swing analysis: Paul Azinger
Here we have another example of golfing genius, a pure talent with a mean competitive streak that I believe would have put him in the same category as Lee Trevino as a multiple major winner and dominant player had it not been for his unfortunate brush with cancer at the peak of his career. Continue reading
Swing Analysis: Contenders at the PGA Championship
One of the things that stood out to my eye in the recent PGA Championship at the Atlanta Athletic Club was the wide disparity of swing types among the top contenders. Here I take 7 players who populated the leader board on Saturday and use the video to comment and compare their swings. Continue reading
Swing Analysis: Keegan Bradley
Man, is this a cool swing to watch. I don’t think I have ever seen a player move so much from their heels forward during the swing and not have all sorts of issues getting to the ball. Once again it is proven that you can almost never say “you can’t do this and be good”. Continue reading
Swing Analysis: Tiger Woods Now vs. 2000
Granted, Tiger Woods has a lot on his mind. There is a popular thought that his poor play is totally a result of the fact that he has essentially blown up his life and that all he has left is money, but since we are golfers and not psychiatrists we will focus on what I believe to be the major change he has made beginning in 2008 and which I think is hindering his comeback. Continue reading
Swing Analysis: Yani Tseng
Here we take a look at what could become the swing of the greatest woman golfer ever. Certainly, Tseng has a leg up on that quest, having won 5 major championships at the young age of 22. It is easily the most dynamic swing in women’s golf, fast, full and powerful, and it employs the hallmarks of some of the greatest male players of the past, swing techniques that we have discussed here at WDGLC at length. Continue reading
Swing Analysis: Nick Watney
In Nick Watney we see what I would call the “prototype” of the new Tour player, namely one that is tall, strong, talented, and technique oriented. Watney is as conventional as Bubba Watson is not, and it is evident that he is technique oriented as he has managed to improve his swing over the last 3 years by fixing a faulty takeaway and working into a much less crossed position for the shaft at the top of the swing. Continue reading
Swing Analysis: Bobby Jones
Bobby Jones, one of the all-time greatest golfers. He is the only player to win all four major championships in one calendar year and co-founded the Masters. In this swing analysis, we see how Bobby’s golf swing differs from the modern day golf swing, yet still displays some of the same characteristics of all great ball-strikers. Head lowering, hips in the box, right arm action, forward lean and more, a lot of the same factors you see in all great players you see in Jones as well. Continue reading
Swing Analysis: Darren Clarke
What a great win for Darren Clarke at this year’s British Open. Reading his biography and getting an insight on what he has gone through personally with the death of his wife one can only be in awe of the power of the human spirit in the face of tragedy. Continue reading
Swing Analysis: K.J. Choi
When we look at K.J. Choi’s golf swing the first thing that has to come to mind is the obvious look of the dreaded “over the top” move wherein the hands and arms swing out toward the ball as the swing changes direction from backward to forward. Continue reading
Swing Analysis: Rory McIlroy
Here we have Rory McIlroy and in this video we do a side-by-side comparison of Rory’s golf swing from the US Open and The Masters. Now, obviously there was something in Rory’s golf swing that let him down in the fourth round at the Masters and there was something he improved on before the US Open. Continue reading
Swing Analysis: Angel Cabrera
In this video we look at Cabrera’s swing in all its free flowing, old school glory as he rips into the ball with gleeful abandon. Continue reading
Swing Analysis: Lee Trevino
Trevino controlled the ball as well as anyone ever, preferring a low fade with the longer clubs, and was a master with the wedge. What jumps out about his swing, other than his idiosyncratic alignment, is the massive bend he produces in his posture as he swings, which should have long ago put to rest the conventional notion that it is a good idea to “maintain posture” during the swing. Continue reading
Swing Analysis: Bill Haas
Back in 2002 I was fortunate enough to have my choice of 6 Tour events to play in as a result of my victory in the previous year’s National Club Pro Championship. I chose as one of my events The Greater Greensboro Open, which was somewhat of a homecoming as I had attended Wake Forest for two years in the 70’s. Continue reading
Swing Analysis: Greg Norman

Swing Analysis: Seve Ballesteros
If you were around in the late 70’s and 80’s and you liked golf at all you were probably familiar with Seve Ballesteros. He was wild and powerful, yet possessed a magician’s touch to extract himself from self-inflicted trouble, usually off the tee. Continue reading
The 2011 Masters: McIlroy’s Meltdown
So what happened to Rory McIlroy at this year’s Masters? The question is this: did McIlroy’s swing change on Sunday for whatever reason? My sense is that it did not, at least not in an appreciably noticeable fashion, and I think the video proves that that is the case. Continue reading
Swing Analysis: Luke Donald
When we think of Luke Donald the first thing that comes to mind is the syrupy rhythm and the perfectly balanced finish, which make his swing appear graceful and uncommonly effortless, sort of a refined Fred Couples. Continue reading
Swing Analsys: A Closer Look at Brandel Chamblee’s Video Analysis of Tiger Woods
Okay, call me a contrarian. Now that questioning Tiger Woods judgment in changing his golf swing under the guidance of Sean Foley is in vogue, I am firmly putting a stake in the ground: I believe that Tiger is on a good path that will eventually lead to his return as a dominant player and he will almost certain to surpass 18 major victories in his lifetime. Continue reading

Swing Analysis: Tiger Woods in 2000: The Myth of the Perfect Swing

Swing Analysis: Bubba Watson
So Bubba Watson is being interviewed, and he’s asked if he has any advice for the average player who’s trying to add a few yards to his or her driver. “You know, I just swing smooth and try to hit the center of the clubface”. Gee, thanks Bubba. That oughta do it. I’ll just swing smooth and make sure I hit the sweet spot and pretty soon I’ll be out there with you. Continue reading
